[Anime Review]/Nekogami Yaoyorozu (Cat God)

Okay, I'm not even sure where to start with this one to be quite honest. We stumbled across it while watching things on Crunchyroll just randomly and we got hooked, so we watched the whole series really quick. That said, this series is completely mental. I say that in a good way, though it does leave you a bit confused. Originally having aired as Nekogami Yaoyorozu (it's been titled as Cat God on Crunchyroll) back in Summer 2011. Looking back at it, it's pretty quick to see that this part of a much larger manga run as some things jumped around a little and that's very true since the manga started in 2007 and is still ongoing.

  • Genre: Comedy/Supernatural
  • Length: 12ep
  • Rating: 6.5/10
  • Recommendation: Give it a spin, but tread lightly as this does take a crazy turn at one point that leaves you going "WTF just happened?!"

Things start off chaotically and we're just tossed into the story without much warning or explanation as to what's going on with Maru and Yuzu or why anything is the way it is. Well, there was that little voice over about the gods of practically everything living amongst regular people despite it being the 21st century, but outside of that? Nope, no clue what's happening as we're quickly introduced to a few other gods who all seem completely insane and the relationships with each other even more so! Even the seemingly sane ones are insane. Though, I guess that being a god that can happen pretty easily. (A fact that Carrie pointed out rather quickly to me too) In fact, not much is really explained in detail other than Maru has been sent to earth as a punishment for breaking her house arrest. Why she was on house arrest? Anyone's guess really, but apparently something to do with being lazy with her powers and the like. That's about all we ever find out until farther along in the series.

Basically through the course of the season you have Maru, a pretty lazy and nearly good for nothing cat god of lost things, helping or not helping so much with various issues that plague the other local gods who reside in the area and a few that don't. All of who continually hang out around Maru and Yuzu. Some of the more insane moment revolve around Yukina Kamo, a manga artist, and the constant attempts by Gonta, the local fox god, trying to get with Yuzu. The constant fighting between Meiko and Sasana (Maru's fiance...long story on that one) over Maru is definitely amusing as well. We don't find out much about Yuzu or a few of the others until later episodes either, when the series turns a bit more serious in nature.

Again, not much is really explained until about halfway through and when it they do it, it really comes as a shocker. It really changed the mood of the whole series and suddenly there was a story arc that took over. Sure the insane antics continued, but the majority of the episodes were far more serious and just peppered with humor. This is what made us to believe that there was a lot they were trying to fit into this run. A lot of things are explained via flashbacks and stories told by Maru or Yuzu for the most part, but there is still quite a bit that's left up in the air. Some characters and events that show up later make the story move along, but it's definitely not in the way that one expects it to compared to the first 3 or 4 episodes...not by a long shot.

Despite the fact that even the pacing the season and how it was presented was chaotic in and of itself, the show wasn't bad at all. There's a point where everything changes and you actually care about the characters on a different level than in the earlier episodes. It's not a bad thing, just wish they would've warned us that it was coming!

Overall, I'd say give it a shot. It is really enjoyable and to be honest the 6.5 rating that I've given it really doesn't seem fair as it probably should be a bit higher, but the split personality of how the series ran was just a little too jarring to get it a bit higher.
